Kangaroo Island Environment

More than 40 percent of Kangaroo Island is a combination of National Parks, Conservation Parks and Wilderness Protection Areas, Heritage Areas and privately owned bushland, ensuring significant areas of diverse and fascinating ecosystems are maintained. A harmonious balance of conservation and agriculture graces Kangaroo Island while the gentle tidal influence of its nutrient rich, pristine waters yield a bountiful harvest.

The island and its marine waters are home to 18 species of terrestrial mammals, 18 reptile species, 6 frog species, 231 recorded fish species and 5 kinds of seagrass. With its remarkable abundance of wildlife and its unspoilt, natural environment, it truly is a beautiful place on earth.

KI has it’s own subspecies of kangaroo (aptly called the Kangaroo Island, or Sooty Kangaroo). They’re a little smaller and stockier than their close relatives, the Western gray, with a slight chocolate brown tinge in their fur.

Australian Sea Lions and New Zealand fur seals are both extremely popular animals on Kangaroo Island. While the Australia Sea Lions prefer the beaches in and around Seal Bay, the New Zealand Fur Seals can be seen around the islands’ rocky coastline. The Australian Sea Lions are unique to South Australia and Western Australia.
